The Fan(zine) Activity Achievement Awards (FAAns)

The first rule of the FAAn awards is that there are no rules for the FAAn awards, at least none that are chiselled in stone and worshipped as if they were dictated by Hammurabi. The very early history of the awards is coming to light, thanks in no small part to the efforts of fanac.org (see their fanzine listings under ‘Fan polls, Awards and Discussions’) and would now appear to date back to 1959 in proto-form. Documentation of Moshe Feder's 1974 proposals (which were taken up in a revised form for the awards running from 1975-80 – see details below) is also available.

Since the 1995 revival of the FAAns after a fifteen year gap, their administration has passed through divers hands. In September 2023 Nic Farey researched the original Corflu documentation for each year’s Awards and prepared this detailed history of how they have been administered from 1995 to date. Valuable assistance was received from Claire Brialey, Murray Moore, Janice Murray, Ian Sorensen and Spike.

Very generally, there are two points of consensus to the process. Firstly, the awards are given for work originally published in the previous calendar year, although this has in the past been expressed as “the last twelve months” before settling on the current window. Secondly, voting is open to anyone with an interest in fanzines. No convention or group membership is required. The FAAns have been associated with (and presented at) Corflu for reasons of both convenience and logic, as it’s the annual fanzine fans convention, but it must be stressed again that Corflu membership is not a requirement for voting.

The ballot is typically issued early in the year the awards are scheduled to be given and is linked at the corflu.org main page, efanzines.com and other venerable sources.

Written September 2020 by Nic Farey (current administrator), and updated October 2022

This page was originally created by Tracy Benton, to whom goes all credit for setting up the corflu.org website and maintaining it for many years.

Research has uncovered further contemporary accounts of FAAn Award recipients, and this page is current as of April 2023.

—Bill Burns, Corflu.org Webmaster.

The FAAns were initially dated for the year of activity, not the year of presentation. Beginning in 1995 the awards are dated for when they were presented.
